Why Piranhas Are Dangerous.

There are approximately 20 species of piranha found living in the Amazon River, with only four or five of them posing any danger. Most piranha species are quite harmless and docile, but the ones with the nasty reputation for aggressive behavior are the red-bellied piranha, Pygocentrus nattereri.

The piranha is distantly related to the dainty minnow and the lazy catfish. But you would never know it from his looks or from his character. He is a flat, rather round fish with stubby fins and tail, His fishy scales are silvery blue. There is a red streak on the lower fin and at certain seasons the underside of the male fish is streaked with vermilion. His worst feature
is his face which is as ugly as his nature.

Fish expert, Dr. Axelrod, once stated on network television that piranhas are not dangerous to people. Later he was dared to prove it, and prove it he did. He waded into piranha infested waters wearing only swim trunks. Placing a large piece of meat on a fishhook, he dangled it in the water and waited to see what happened. The piranha tore into the meat but not Dr. Axelrod. Although I wouldn't recommend reaching in the tank to pet your piranha, as long as they are well fed they aren't likely to bite you.
